A liberal church says, "you are welcome here, and you don't have to change." A conservative church says, "you are not welcome here until you do change." Jesus says, "You are welcome here, and I will change you from the inside out." Why! Why! Why! Why are there lots of divisions in the Church? There have been several things to happen that have divided churches over the years. Some legit others not so legit. I'm not saying that we should have one big Church that we should all worship at, and I am not a hater that there are multiple churches in one town. I am saying that churches should not split over stupid things like the color of the carpet or instruments. I am saying that the Churches in that community should work together to lead others to Christ and fulfill the Great Commission (Acts 1:8). If you want the mission of the Church, Acts 1:8 is our mission in a nutshell which says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." This is our mission to lead others to Christ. To quote Emil Brunner, "The Church exists by mission, just as a fire exists by burning. Where there is no mission, there is no Church; and where there is neither Church nor mission, there is no faith."
A question that people sometimes ask is, why is the Church dying? Here's your answer because we as Christians are not fulfilling the Great Commission. We'd rather sit on our couches doing nothing than serving in the community. We'd rather watch Netflix than invest in other people. I am not trying to make anyone feel bad or say that it's terrible to watch Netflix. What I am saying is wake up, Church. Do not get caught up with stupid things? Do not hate your brother because he worships God differently than you! Follow what the Bible says and realize that conflict is a regular thing. It's okay to disagree with someone on a non salvation issue. But what's not okay is to treat the person you disagree with like trash.
Another thing that divides us is Conservatism vs. Liberalism. There are so many ways to define these terms, but I will be explaining them here as follows. Conservatism is to preserve existing conditions, institutions or to restore traditional ones and limit change. Liberalism desires to adapt religion to modern thought and culture. Many times Christians either fall into one category or the other. However, I think that it's more important to stay in the middle. If one becomes too conservative, they are unwilling to change even if they are wrong, but if one is too liberal, they change with every new idea. The Church isn't the same as it was fifty years ago; some things need to change. However, we have to do something as a Church to find a way to move forward with a Christ-Centered foundation. This is important to the future of the Church. The Church must be united in Christ and not let petty things split us.
