Jonathan Edwards was an American theologian and preacher. Edwards is best known for his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Edwards originally preached this sermon to his congregation in Northampton, Massachusetts. However, he later preached it in Enfield, Connecticut, which caused the Great Awakening, which lasted from 1720 to the 1740s.

Jonathan Edwards preached this sermon to try to get people to repent from sin. He was trying to get people to wake up by saying that God would judge them and it would be excruciating and not fun. Secondly, Edwards explains the issues of sin and the nature of God. Thirdly, Edwards describes hell as a painful place that is full of fire and brimstone. Edwards also says, "There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell but the mere pleasure of God." Edwards is saying throughout his whole sermon that now we have a chance to repent and change our ways. He describes his listeners as people who are running away from God. Lastly, Edwards encourages the people hearing his sermon to go back to God. That God is always ready to forgive people who want to be forgiven. Edwards presents the only way to avoid God's wrath is to follow God's commandments. It is very true and I would encourage you guys to listen to it. It is a very powerful lesson that a lot of us still have to learn.
